2020 Risk Management Seminar – Denver

Our Denver seminar was Tuesday, February 25, 2020 and was a great success!  The topic was, Claim is a five letter word: what happens when it happens to you.  Barb Sable from RLI Insurance Company and Benton Barton with Hall & Evans, LLC both presented.

Claims can be a scary word and the idea of the program is to ease the minds of your firms to be able to navigate claims and increase the risk management practices in your firm.

There were three main areas that the seminar focused on.  Pollution claims, safety and an architects/engineers responsibility on site and security awareness.  Also, Barb Sable discussed what to do and not to do in the event of claim.

Pollution claims can have an effect on architects and engineering firms. Pollution coverage is included in the Professional Liability policy but read your policy so your firm knows what is and what isn’t covered.  For example, most Professional Liability polices do not cover a nuclear event.

Is your firm responsible for site safety?  This is going to depend on how your contract is written and it is vitally important that this is addressed.  There were different scenarios discussed were your firm could be held at least partially responsible if the site safety is not brought to someone’s attention.

Security awareness in design has becoming a growing issue for architects and engineers.  Depending on the type of building the security design will vary but there are projects that the design professional would be required to provide added security by design.

If your firm is drawn into a claim, there are some dos and don’ts to be aware of.  Do report it to the insurance company immediately and don’t admit responsibility of the issue.

The seminar was three hours long and was very informative for those who attended.  Be sure to keep an eye out for more upcoming seminars.  If you do have questions please call or email your Professional Underwriters agent.Benton Pic risk management
