What to Expect when Reporting a Home Owners Claim

Owning a home can mean dealing with the unexpected. You likely can’t prevent all unwanted surprises, knowing what to expect if you have a homeowner’s claim can help give you some peace of mind.

When reporting your claim to your insurance carrier, have your information ready. Typically, when you report your claim, you will be asked to provide your info, policy info, type and date of loss, and a description of the loss and of any injuries. Your claim will be assigned a claim number and an adjuster who will work with you to complete your claim.

It’s important to take steps to mitigate any further damage. Depending on the damage, you may need to buy tarps or plywood to cover holes in your roof or windows. Be sure to save your receipts as these expenses are reimbursable with most policies.

Using photos or videos can help you remember things that you may have lost.  If you have a home inventory, you may want to have it handy. If you don’t have an inventory, look for photos of the damaged areas. You’ll want to make a list of everything damaged inside your home.

The claim professional typically will call you to discuss what happened, what your insurance policy may or may not cover, and make arrangements to inspect the damage in person.

Protect your home the way it protects you by choosing the property insurance coverage that meets your needs. Speak with an agent at Professional Underwriters to ensure you have adequate coverage.
