Definition of Professional Services in an Architects/Engineers Professional Liability Policy

Each insurance company has a different definition of a Professional Services, be sure to read your insurance policy so that you know what it means for your firm.  Here are a few examples of the Professional Service:

Example 1:

  1. Services the Insured performs for others in the practice of an architect, engineer,

land surveyor, landscape architect, construction manager, space planner, land

planner, interior designer, scientist, technical consultant, expert witness or as

defined by endorsement to the policy.  Information technology services provided for others in the rendering of services as outlined in Section III.M.1. Information technology services include software consultation; interoperability analysis; programming; hosting; and the design, use, support and maintenance of any website, software or database.

  1. Information technology services do not include:
  2. Any services to computer or telecommunication hardware; or
  3. The supplying of electronic products or software (except software designed or modified for an individual client of the Insured in connection with the Insured’s

rendering of other professional services for that client).

 

Example 2:

  1. Architect.
  2. Engineer.
  3. Land surveyor.
  4. Landscape architect.
  5. Construction manager.
  6. Scientist.
  7. Technical consultant.

Example 3:

Professional services means those services that the Insured performs for others on behalf of a Named Insured in the Insured’s practice as an architect, engineer, interior designer, land surveyor, LEED® green building program consultant, landscape architect, construction manager, scientist, or technical consultant.

As you may notice in the examples, the definition may specifically state what types of services your firm can provide.  There are other policies that state the professional services as described in the Professional Liability application submitted.  Be sure to check with your insurance company if the services offered are outside of the definition, they may be able to endorse the policy to include that service.
